Guess Who Reading Game: Which Monster?
Someone at the party took Mr Moon's hat, and Barry saw who did it... sort of. The class reads his notes one at a time and sends out every monster a note rules out. Then they ask Barry yes or no questions, and finally hide the hat and write the notes themselves.
Free, no sign-in. Ready to play on the board, with a printable worksheet at three levels and a home version.
- Ages: 6 to 11
- Language: Colours, shapes, has got, is wearing, is holding, not, and, but
- Players: 2 or 3 teams, the whole class, or one child at home
- Time: About 15 minutes
- Voice: Mr Moon, Barry and the monsters all speak
How to play Which Monster?
- Read Barry's notes. Each note says something about the monster with the hat ("It is wearing glasses", "It hasn't got horns"). Tap every monster it can't be, then check.
- Guess. When the team is sure, they guess. The fewer notes they needed, the more points.
- Ask Barry. Teams build yes or no questions ("Has it got spots?") and Barry answers.
- Write the notes. A team hides the hat on a monster and writes the notes for another team to read.
Learning by doing
The notes are clues in a mystery the class wants to solve, so every sentence is read for its meaning: one word, like not or but, changes which monsters stay. In the last round the class writes clues another team must be able to follow.
The worksheet
Two puzzles at Support, a line-up of six with notes and short answers at Core, and longer notes with and and but at Challenge, where students also fix false notes and write their own. Answer key and home QR code included.
