Question Quest — Past, Present and Future
An A2 speaking board game for young learners practising question-forming across past, present, and future tenses. 24 cells of pair-talk, group quiz-building, mime-and-guess, mini-presentation, and quick-fire question-and-answer. Mixed structure prevents the 'Ask your partner' monotony that drilled younger learners.
A free Board Game for Young learners at CEFR A2 level. Topic: Questions.
Speaking prompts on the board
- Tell the group ONE question you'd love someone to ask YOU today. Just the question — your team has to answer it later!
- Ask your partner: 'What did you have for breakfast yesterday?' Then they ask you the same about TODAY.
- Group challenge: Together, build five questions starting with 'Will you...' about tomorrow. Take turns asking one each.
- Mime an action you did yesterday. Your team asks YES/NO past-tense questions ('Did you eat? Did you run?') until they guess!
- Ask your partner THREE questions starting with 'Have you got...?' about animals, toys, or food at home.
- Mini-presentation: Tell the group what you DID yesterday after school (1 minute). Use past simple. Group then asks 2 follow-up questions.
- Quick: Make ONE question about NEXT weekend using 'Will you...?' Ask the person on your right.
- Pair-talk: Ask your partner: 'Where do you usually sit in class?' and 'Where DID you sit yesterday?' Compare answers.
- Group: Each person says one WH-word (What, Where, When, Who, Why, How). Then build a question with that word about your school day.
- Ask your partner: 'When is your birthday?' (present) and 'What did you do on your last birthday?' (past). Then swap.
- Mime watching a film and reacting. Your team asks: 'Did you like it? Was it scary? Will you watch it again?' until they guess your feelings!
- Tell the group: 'Where will you go this summer?' Then turn to a teammate and ask THEM the same question.
- Pair-talk: Ask your partner: 'What's your favourite ice cream flavour?' (present) and 'Did you have ice cream this week?' (past).
- Group challenge: Build a chain of questions about hobbies. Each person asks the next: 'Do you...?', 'Did you...?', 'Will you...?' — three different tenses!
- Quick: Ask the person on your LEFT: 'What time did you go to bed last night?' Then ask: 'What time will you go to bed tonight?'
- Mime someone asking a confused question. Your team guesses what the question is in any tense!
- Ask your partner FIVE quick questions about food using 'Do you like...?' Get five YES/NO answers in 30 seconds!
- Tell the group what you LEARNED at school yesterday. Group asks 2 past-tense questions to find out more.
- Pair-talk: 'What music do you like?' (present), 'What did you listen to today?' (past), 'Will you sing for me?' (future). Three questions, three tenses.
- Group: Build a quiz! Each team member writes ONE question (any tense) about another team member. Take turns asking and answering.
- Mime a scary face. Your team asks: 'Did you see a ghost? Are you scared? Will you sleep tonight?' until you laugh and answer one!
- Quick: Make ONE 'Why...?' question and ask anyone in the group. Their answer should start with 'Because...'
- Pair-talk: Ask your partner: 'What's in your school bag?' (present), 'What did you forget today?' (past), 'What will you need tomorrow?' (future).
- Final challenge! Each team member asks ONE question — but it must use a DIFFERENT tense from everyone else (past, present, OR future). The team that uses all three wins!
