Young learners compare and contrast animals by asking partners, acting out animal movements, and discussing what makes animals similar or different. Teams race around the board answering speaking prompts about animal characteristics, habitats, and behaviors.

Speaking prompts on the board

1. Ask your partner: what is your favorite animal and why do you like it?
2. Act out a big animal walking. Your partner guesses which animal you are.
3. Describe one animal that is bigger than a cat and one that is smaller.
4. Ask your partner: do you have a pet? What does it look like?
5. Your team must agree: which animal is faster, a rabbit or a turtle?
6. Stand up and mime a small animal eating. Can your friends guess it?
7. Compare a bird and a fish. How are they the same? How are they different?
8. Ask your partner: what animal makes you happy and what animal makes you scared?
9. You have 30 seconds to describe your favorite animal to the class.
10. Discuss with your group: where do lions live and where do fish live?
11. Show with your hands: how big is a dog? How big is an elephant?
12. Explain: can a dog swim? Can a cat swim? Why or why not?
13. Ask your partner: what do cows eat and what do lions eat?
14. Act out a monkey playing and jumping. Your team guesses the animal.
15. Your team must agree: which animal is the best swimmer and why?
16. Compare a snake and a lizard. What is the same? What is different?
17. Describe an animal with four legs and an animal with two legs.
18. You have 30 seconds to tell us about an animal you saw at the zoo.
19. Stand up and mime a flying animal. Can your friends name it?
20. Ask your partner: which animal is faster, a cheetah or a snail?
21. Discuss with your group: do all animals have fur? Give examples.
22. Explain: how is a duck different from a chicken? What can a duck do?
23. Compare a bear and a dog. How are they the same? How are they different?
